Installation X posing (2010)
Form
The work X posing (2009) is an installation piece, consisting of four video projections, (created from background materials) placed in spaces, walls and corners of a room with black painted walls. The black absorbs light offering an environment that is bounded around the viewer, leaving the viewer facing internal structures of a corporeal body. There is audio with two of the projections (not recorded here, view individual and background materials), rhythmic episodes referencing the internal activity of the corporeal human. The work moves towards creating an internal bodily space that has been interpreted (by viewers) either as the internal expression of the viewer, that is the experience of feeling that they are viewing and sensing their own internal existence, or an experience of being inside the body of another. Given the dark environment some viewers have had to leave the space feeling too uncomfortable, both scenarios above being offered as explanations.
Process
The work was created from background materials developed into four projected videos developed from X ray materials taken of my corporeal body. My thanks to the medics for their support and response to my request for records. The collected material was manipulated with and without audio. The recordings are played in relation to each other, creating a complex and changing set of visual and audio tensions and rhythms. that reference the internal workings of a living corporeal body.
Context
The work was a development out of the collection of material from my own body, paralleling and referencing medical interventions to my body which in turn opened an increasing awareness of life/death of inside /outside and of our human/posthuman existence. The installation gave access to a sense of inner structure, space and activity in life.
