Awareness of our Surroundings

Awareness of Our SurroundingsAs we journey through our daily routines, our awareness of the environment around us fluctuates. Sometimes we are acutely conscious of what surrounds us, while at other times, our senses are dulled to the details of our setting.

The Influence of Nature
The flora and fauna envelop us, marking the passage of time and the transitions between seasons. Trees, initially bare, gradually sprout new buds that flourish and burst into life, offering shade that we often take for granted. As the months roll on, these vibrant leaves begin to fade, eventually falling away as part of nature’s cycle. This ever-present transformation within the forest serves as a poignant reminder: just as the trees change and age with each season, so do we.

Understanding Our Own Cycle
With the arrival and departure of each season, we gain a deeper understanding of our personal life cycle. Our own existence mirrors that of the trees around us, and with time, we are reminded that ageing is a universal experience.

Self-Awareness and Care
At first, we may rush through the wonders of life, but eventually, we begin to slow down and become more aware of our own inner structure. The trees that surround us require attention to their ageing branches and damaged trunks; we too come to a point of needing intervention to maintain our well-being. Subjected Senses exposes this.

The Connectivity of the Forest
The forest’s flora is intricately connected, with plants reaching out across distances to share, warn, and help one another. This network not only supports the growth and survival of various species but also provides shelter for the animals and people who reside within the environment.

Human Community and Support
This interconnectedness is mirrored in human behaviour. People form groups and communities, creating support systems that reflect the forest’s way of being. These networks offer assistance and comfort, much like the flora that nurtures and sustains life within the forest.

I am a UK-based contemporary artist and researcher: the work seeks to loosen boundaries, using painting, built canvas, and mixed media. My practice explores living today, the shifting relationship between our the human body, memory, and identity, in the age of fast evolving technology — a conversation between the physical-now and the posthuman. Drawing on influences from biology, philosophy, and psychology, my work invites reflection on the experience of living today.
Featured Works:
From early oil paintings such as FROM HERE; Treading Water (1995), above, to recent pieces like TO HERE: X/uberant (2023), above, my art expresses an evolving visual language.
Artist Statement:
My creative process is intuitive. I investigate how the body is reimagined in contemporary culture — from the flesh-and-blood human to the technologically extended self and the technically stand alone self — drawing on thinkers including Stelarc, Hans Moravec, and Katherine Hayles. This journey is expressed through various means, video,  layered surfaces, tactile marks, and constructed forms.

The changing images are all a part of the Journey, each one moving forward or crossing over notions in the development of my studio work.

Visual language, drawing, painting, installations, is my means to 'see' more, understand more. My way of thinking. Early works of people close to me, favourite places, memories, helping me to know who and where in the world I exist, looking out from inside. I remain site for my work, exploring my  existence today.

The term Posthuman, felt like a piece of a jigsaw, you know it is part of the whole, but what and where is it from? It excited me and led to questioning identity; mine, yours, the condition of our now species.
