The Displacement of Artist Researchers

Created as part of research work exploring notions of the posthuman, several video projections are presented within a darkened room where all walls are painted black. The viewer steps into a body. The works are all constructed from material from the artist's own body, the installation can be interpreted as one's own body or someone elses' body. Some viewers stated they found it too disturbing to stay with. How human are we still, today, how is the posthuman structure unfolding and developing. Unless it is debated it will be an automatic endgame. | We exist in a a society that recognises Art, and recognises Research, leaves Artist Researchers and their work, invisible. The amount of financial investment that this wastes is vast. PhD Art Practitioners spend years of their lives honing their work which is then left to gather dust because there is no recognisable platform from where to distribute their work. Art Galleries, on the whole, view them as academics, Academia views them as artists. The visual is often the Art Researchers preferred language, it is the root of complex thinking and exploring of ideas in the theoretical and practical realm . There are current debates as to whether the art works themselves are enough and can be accepted as an exposition of a research question This position is supported by SAR the Society for Artist Researchers. Their journal arm JAR has created online space to do this. My own position is that, yes, the artwork stands alone as works of art, however a key is neede to unlock and see the underlying theoretical adventure. |
